Sound

While deciding the direction that I wanted to go with for this sound project, I really thought about everyday things and routines that often go unnoticed. Cooking felt like the right choice because it’s something I do regularly, but I rarely stop to actually listen to what I'm doing as it has become second nature. I focused on capturing small, specific sounds like chopping, sizzling, stirring, to show how much we really rely on these sounds visually. By isolating these sounds, I wanted the listener to build a mental image of the process on their own, relying entirely on sound rather than sight.

“We employ visual and spatial metaphors for a great many everyday expressions… We are so visually biased that we call our wisest men visionaries, or seers!”

Even though cooking is usually thought of as a visual activitywatching food change, checking color, and platingthe sound alone carries just as much meaning. The sounds of oil or the steady scrape of a spoon communicate progress, texture, and timing without needing to be seen. Through this one-minute sound clip, I wanted to show that visual bias and show how sound can shape understanding and imagination just as strongly, if not more, than images.
